National Board Certified Teachers
National Board Certified Teachers are teachers who have achieved National Board Certification, the most respected professional certification available in education. Certification was designed to develop, retain, and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. It provides numerous benefits to teachers, students, and schools. Learn More
Under 20,000 of the over 4,000,000 public school teachers across the country have achieved certification – less than ½ of 1% of the population of public-school teachers nationally.
National Board Certification is available in 25 areas of specialization. To obtain certification, teachers:
complete a test that evaluates their knowledge of the subject and teaching approaches in that subject,
submit a portfolio of their students’ work and describe how it demonstrates their abilities as a teacher,
submit a video and analysis of the video showing the quality of their interactions with students, and
submit materials that demonstrate that they are a reflective and effective teacher by showing how they apply knowledge of their students and understanding of assessments and curricular modifications to impact their students’ learning.
